First Music!
A minor discussion has cropped up on Craig’s blog centring around early musical tastes… Therefore I thought it might be nice to briefly post my first foray’s into the world of pop, rock and (a-hm) jive.
My first cassette (gift)
Back in the late 80s my grandparents took my sister for a week long holiday to Portugal. Whilst over there my sister bought me a tape; Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers.
I couldn’t name the specific album, though in hindsight it was probably bootleg. I do remember that it had red tape in it (instead of the usual black) how odd.

Back in the 90s when the Jeans advert music fad was strongley underway (now undergoing a resurgance I believe) pretty much any track featuring on the advert, from the classic re-release of The Joker to the bizarre flat beat (starring Flat Eric) and via the dreadful spaceman, became a number one single.
One of these was Inside by a band called Stiltskin. The song played regularly alongside “mmm mmm mmm mmm” on the radio playing whilst I underwent 2 weeks of microfilming for work experience.
Weeks later, the album became my first ever musical purchase. Quickly followed by the Crash Test Dummies effort, “God Shuffled His Feet”.
About a month later I was buying around two albums a month or so, but I didn’t get a CD player until christmas 1996 which brings me to;

That christmas in question!
My parents made the slight error of giving me a £10 token with the message “For a CD!” in it, before giving me my main christmas present… A CD player!
hours later, as I turned 17, I opened up my christmas presents to find “Down on the Upside” by Soundgarden - to this day one of my favourite albums and one I’ve had to buy on two further occasions due to it being stolen twice. (Once from my house whilst I was at the cinema, along with my own laptop - and once from the boot of somebodies car when I was at a work meeting in Birmingham, along with my work laptop)
My First CD (bought)
I really can’t remember, though it’s quite likely that it would’ve been by one of the bands I was getting into at the time - Metallica or GnR etc etc. If I had to guess I’d go for “… And Justice For All” by Metallica.
I got into music quite late as it happens (as you may be able to tell from the above timings), I put this mostly down to the lack of exposure to music I actually liked. I never really got into the britpop thing in the mid 90s (I have since got in to some of the bands present then) and ended up drifting into heavier rock by late 96, early 97, when I also started to play guitar.
A lot of recordable cassettes used to have a red tape section at both ends of the tape which was non-magnetic so that you could wind the tape on to the end and project the data on the tape.
Inside is a great rack when you’ve in a foul mood. I permanently distorted a speaker listening to that.
