This is the Weekend.

On Friday I went to Caffe Uno, I had a burger - which is a cop out - but it tasted very nice.

Saturday, Lunch was at Kro picadilly with Donna, Jay and selected others… I had spare ribs which were nice.

Back home and football on tv was swiftly followed by joining the end of Howell’s pub crawl. We visited The Sand Bar, Harrys, Peverill of the peak (very full) & Britain’s Protection. We then popped down to the Salisbury where Linden, Mark and some (ex-) mugss resided.

Got back around half one.

Sunday was football and food and shopping, culminating in a fantastic fish pie in the evening.

and all of a sudden, it’s Monday.

Madrid

Went to Madrid this weekend.

Pre-Madrid

Sarah had her exam last week, and afterwards we went out to get drunk. Ended up at some pub on Barlow Moor Lane really close to where her new flat is going to be. We proceeded to be crap in the pub quiz. I had a headache in the morning.

Madrid

And then we were off… We flew on Friday after getting a quick lift to the airport from Sarah’s dad, and landed sometime around 5pm? Madrid time.

I was slightly ill all weekend, but a bevy of pills sorted that out decently.

We found our hostel easily (it turns out to be above McDonalds and in a red light district!) and dropped our stuff off before going for a wander. We ended up walking down much of the Gran Via before heading towards the opera area.

We ate at a nice resturant where I ordered the traditional Madrineño stew.

It arrived in a big pot and the waiter proceeded to poor it out so I had what looked like a large chicken noodle soup.

I checked inside the pot to find that all the ingrediants (meat, veg etc…) were still in there and picked a few out and started to eat.

After 10 mins or so the waiter comes back and pours the rest of the contents out, my plate is so full it’s starting to spill over the sides….

I make headway into it, getting through about half of it, when the waiter appears again and spoons up several large tablespoons worth of cabbage.

I almost finished it, but I was very very full!

nice though!

the wine was also very nice, a rioja called Valoria, or something, it was just the house red, but it was nice.

The next day we trundled around madrid finding this and that and misnaming everything along the way before deciding to pop off and see the santiago bernabeu (Real Madrids Stadium).

I did the tour, well worth €10 that it cost.

On our way back into town we got off at the Tribunal tube stop (all tube journeys, irrespective of length, cost €1 in Madrid, which is a very good system). and looked for somewhere to eat.

On our way towards a café I noticed an Irish bar was showing the Liverpool match, so we snuck in for a look at the score…. upon seeing it was 2-0 to us, we decided to watch the second half and eat there.

Afterwards we headed off to the hostel via a very long walk through the city. A brief rest and we were on our way out for dinner again.

The place we’d spotted in the guide book turned out to be very expensive, so instead we chose a place nearby. We did wander around Madrid a bit before going back to it though, at one point discovering the Plaza Mayor, after following some random people.

the resturant was very nice, and very fishy. I had my first ever bit of lobster.

The service was slooooow however, and it was midnight before we made our way back, naq’d, through tio pepe square and the statue of a bear that Sarah kept missing.

The final day was spent meandering around Madrid again, before finding the parque Retiro, or whatever it’s called. It’s worth pointing out that the weather was very nice, up to 16 on the Saturday, with no rain or wind - very different to England, where we had gales when we left, and snow when we arrived.

We spent ages looking for lunch before having some mini sandwiches and a ben & jerry’s ice cream… and then it was over - we headed back to the airport and got on a plane (fortunately it were the plane next to ours which had taken off without it’s passengers….) and landed sometime around 7pm.

Back in work now, though I’m still run down so not getting much done.

Soundtrack Idea

again, I’m a sucker for these things and given the amount of random crap on my iPod was interested to see what the results were.

If your life was a movie, what would the soundtrack be?

So, here’s how it works:
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, RHYTHMBOX etc)
2. Put it on shuffle
3. Press play
4. For every question, type the song that’s playing
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button
6. Don’t lie and try to pretend you’re cool…

Opening Credits - Bone Machine (Pixies)
Waking Up - Hooligans For Life (Rival Schools)
First Day of School - I Want to Hold Your Hand (Beatles)
Falling in Love - Montagues & Capulets (Prokofiev)
Fight Song - Nice Dream (Radiohead)
Breaking Up - Myopia (Team)
Prom - Mindfields (Prodigy)
Life - Breadfan (Metallica)
Driving - Bridges (erm… by me!)
Flashback - Damage (The Cooper Temple Clause)
Getting Back Together - Doll (Foo Fighters)
Wedding - Elite (Deftones)
Party - Message (The Grates)
Birth of A Child - This Wicked Tongue (PJ Harvey)
Final Battle - The Only One I Know (Charlatans)
Funeral Song - High 5 (Rock the Catskills) (Beck)
Ending Credits - Hey (Pixies)

doesn’t really work.

“c’est la weekend!”

Weekend happened…

I watched football…

Watford 0-3 Liverpool
Man Utd 3-1 Villa
Blackburn 0-2 Arsenal

and drunk beer most of Saturday. I also took time out to cheer up sarah, who’s under the weather just prior to her exam (oo-er!).

Sunday was then mostly spent running around with much to do. Rosy cooked a bacon joint which was lunch for 6 (adrian, emma, sarah & mahinda) and more football was watched (another two games, so 5 for the weekend)

Later in the evening I popped out to al cine with the missus to catch Deja Vu which was a disappointing film (2/5).

It would easily have got 3/5 if it hadn’t gone all ridiculous at the end (it just doesn’t make sense!) but I won’t give it away. (don’t bother, though).

and that, as they say, was that. I’m now about to go and play footie.

My plans for this week are varied. They involve drinking tomorrow and going to Spain on Friday… let’s see how it pans out.

Work

First week back in the office (properly) and I’ve done some work. I may have found a problem with a proof I’ve been using (one I didn’t write) but I’ve probably missed something obvious.

That’s pretty much all the excitement for this week… Liverpool lost on tuesday 3-6 to Arsenal Reserves (and I watched it), stayed in every night.

Sarah’s preparing for an exam next week, so I’ve generally been keeping out of her way so she can revise.

No internet at home either - and I went swimming today.

All in all very relaxing, and easy on the wallet.

I’ve a feeling next week won’t be too similar.

Book Questions

I can’t resist these things. Shamelessly nabbed from elsewhere…

1. Do you reckon you read “enough” (in whoever’s terms you want to take that)

Yes and no, sometimes I feel I’d like to read more. I only really get much done on the bus.

2. Is there a genre or type of books that you absolutely hate and will not read?

Trashy romance books like Mills and Boon. Anything which rosy would describe as hard science fiction.

3. If you start a book, give it its fifty pages and still hate it, will you finish it?

No. Cryptonomicon is a good example of one I gave up on, though I tried three times and got about 100 pages through once.

4. Name your five favourite books.

A song of Ice & Fire (series by george r.r. martin)
One of the ones by Robert Harris, possibly Fatherland.
Lord of the Rings
The Twits
Still missing one!

5. What’s your guilty pleasure book… the one you hide away in a drawer?

Why would I hide a book in a drawer?
I like Harry Potter books, which occasionally causes consternation. Also I enjoyed two of Dan Brown’s, which apparently I’m not supposed to do as someone who can think for themselves (which I’ve always found a bit ironic)

6. Which so-called classics, or books one “must have read” did you not like?

Catch 22.
Also, I don’t like the victorian style, so I won’t read any Charles Dickens and, although I liked the story, I didn’t enjoy reading The Turn of the Screw.

7. Do you read poetry? Who is your favourite poet?

No.

8. What are you reading at the moment?

The latest in Mark Billingham’s Thorne series. “Buried”

9. Do you buy your books or do you use a library?

Buy them and keep them.

10. Are you writing yourself?

Not yet. I’ve lots of ideas though so would like to give it a go.

Getting Moving….

So the new year has got underway…

I’m currently:

1) Working on my PhD
2) Arranging a conference
3) Sorting out the home broadband connection
4) Planning trips to Madrid / Bratislava & Basle

& that’s about it.

This week I’m getting back into sport, Football on Monday, Swimming on Friday… Maybe badminton will start up again sometime soon too.

Weekend involved some loveley food and drunkeness culminating in a trip to the slug & lettuce in Didsbury. Lots of football ocurred as it was the FA Cup 3rd round, we lost.

Also, Sarah’s moving soon, so I’m helping out a little with that…

A Year in Music

This time last year I utilised my fine excel skills to produce a list of all the songs I’d been listening to on via my iPod. Unfortunately the little white jukebox has partially fried and refuses to correctly negotiate playcounts. Therefore I thought I’d just post some of the bands I’ve been listening to over the last year:

I’ve got right into Idlewild & The Stone Roses and I’ve probably spent more time listening to them than any other…

Though I’ve also been getting into listening to The Mars Volta & The Deftones.

Whilst continuing my love of Biffy Clryo, Future eX Wife, Metallica, The Cooper Temple Clause & Soundgarden.

And more generally; getting into Jazz & Motown.

That’s a pretty pared down list and it’ll do nicely for now.

Christmas & New Years

Well I finished my shopping in time and then variously took in the delights of christmas and new years whilst piling on a few pounds and avoiding any semblence of work whatso-ever. Yup, another decent christmas!

First off to Stafford to visit my grandma, Sarah popped down for the Saturday to say hi to everyone (& bearing the best cake ever!), before we all trapsed off on the Sunday.

We went to my Uncle and Aunts place in Essex until Boxing day. Of particular note was the giant christmas feast laid on by our hosts.

On the 26th we moseyed on down to Balham and stayed at Anna’s for a few nights, I met up with Brian whilst there for 24 games of pool ( I lost 13-11, though I was 7-0 down at one point) and we ate out at an Italian on the last day… which was Friday.

Made my way back to Manchester and had a second christmas day on the Saturday (the 30th).

Had three parties to choose from on the Sunday, but neither Sarah nor I could be arsed, both feeling that whilst we ought to go to one of the parties neither of us actually wanted to. So we stayed in and played Mario Kart.

Back into work on the 2nd, though Monday and Tuesday were both occupied by sorting things out, so today is my first day actually working!

Tarra!
