Cheltenham, and the rest of it.

another packed week… :)

Let’s start with Friday

After a modicom of work I arrived at the train station raring to go, only to find that the ticket machine wouldn’t let me buy a normal priced ticket… and so I had to buy one which cost £20 more! Less than chuffed, I boarded the train with Adrian, and we were on our way.

We arrived at around ten pm, and caught a cab. Mike & Pam had the genius idea of a curry for dinner, so we stayed in, ate the take-away and ended up watching the Christopher Lee thriller “ The House that Dripped Blood” (interestingly, there was actually no blood in the film at all). All Good Fun.

Tiredness struck and sleep happened. Despite sleeping on a load of sofa cushions I caught up on several hours of sleep… much needed…. and before you knew it Saturday had reared it’s head.

Saturday started off with an episode of Quincy. Naturally.

It wasn’t long, however, until Mike made an appearance and let us know his plan of action:

Greasy Breakfast.
Pool.
Football.
Interspersed with drinking.

We then did:

Greasy Breakfast.
at a local greasy spoon. Pam failed to finish hers, though she ate everyone’s tomato.

Pool.
At the local pool bar. We played Killer (see “Reference” entry below, I wasn’t satisfied with the links I found) which is a great version of the game, and meant all of us could play at the same time. In other news - I now suck at pool.

Football.
The Germany v Sweden game kicked off whilst we were still playing pool, but we carried on ’til around the 60th minute… then we watched the game. Later the Argentina v Mexico game occurred, which provided the evenings entertainment with the additional presence of Jim, Mikes workmate.

Interspersed with drinking.
Lots of drinking occurred starting at 2pm (very slowly on my behalf) and ending up several hours later after the second footie match. I seem to remember lots of people in bumble bee outfits, but beyond that, not too much. I was seeing double when we went home and watched the naked gun (was it the Naked gun?)

We also ate a chinese.

Some of us would pay on Sunday.

Namely : Mike… who entered the front room swearing that he was going to convert to a religion where drinking was not allowed. He spent most of the day in such a state, whilst I wasn’t great I did manage to eat and was well (but tired) by the time we left.

The England Match was then watched on the TV and Adrian and I made a move soon afterwards.

The train home was beset by tiredness and an inability to use my phone.

Upon arriving back Mahinda calls saying he’s got a few people around his house, do I fancy popping over for an hour or so. I explain I’m tired, but but Mahinda, with the aid of Linden convinced me otherwise, the promise of footie highlights sways me.

I turn up and proceed to be tired for a couple of hours before going home after the footie finishes. Welcome sleep occurs.

Monday was upon me and I went in to meet my supervisor.

I left work at aroun 6pm, quickly showered and got myself over to Sarah’s for some fantastic food!

The loverly lady cooked an awesome fish stew, followed by sticky toffee pudding. I was full.

In the background the dullest match of the world cup. I was glad my attention was elsewhere.

Tuesday followed Monday, in time honoured fashion.

Tuesday was a rare night in, allowing me to catch up on washing, and the like, before Allan turned up around 9pm.

I ate a bit of food, watched the France v Spain travesty and popped out for a pint at solomon’s with Linden, Celia, Dan, Mahinda, Rosy, Nick & Allan.

Oh, and I was locked in my office by our porters.

Rather than switch the whole building onto “Card Lock” at 5pm, instead they just locked the front door! Not being able to get out (I quite fancied the second half of Brazil v Ghana) I called security.

Fortunately a lecturer turned up (Dr. Louise Walker) and let us out the back door (which I don’t have access to). I went down to the pub and caught the last 10 mins before heading home.

Wednesday turned out to be a decent day.

We went down to watch Sri Lanka v England at Old Trafford, the yearly pilgrimidge brought about by the lack of an O.T. Test match this summer.

Loads of us were there, so I won’t name them all. Highlights of the day include:

* Relaxing all day with a few pints and friends (the company was exceptional)
* The weather (it only rained for about 20 mins - and I caught the sun)
* The Banter (in general)

Lowlights of the day include:

* My empty cornish pasty!!!
* The irritating kids behind us! there were about 30 of them.
* The hornblower. Grrrr.
* The cost.
* England’s abject performance. Including:
— * Dalrymple’s Nurdling.
— * The Bowling.

Funnily enough the three postives more than outweighed the negatives, by quite some margin.

Afterwards we caught the 250 back to University and then headed into Rusholme. Sarah happily joined us and a quick (!) pint at Hardy’s was then followed by a pre-planned curry at King Cobras (owned by Sri Lankans, some of whom were at the game).

The food took a while to sort out (there were loads of us) but it was delicious as usual. We caught a bus home and watched some of the cricket highlights (yes, I’m that sad) before heading to bed.

When I woke up, it must’ve been Thursday (which is today).

I actually woke up quite early, say 730ish, in order to pick up my parents from the airport.

It took a little while to sort them out, but they arrived, tired of course, and we were back to my place by 1130.

Bacon Butties & Tea happened before they headed off to Hull to spend a few nights sorting themselves out on the eastside ;)

I’ve since come in to work and tried to sort loads of stuff out. Unfortunately I’ve been hampered by closing times of libraries, a lack of stamps & other minor stuff - But I’ve got a fair bit done so I thought I’d update this little fella before heading off home.

Which is what I plan to do right about now.

see ya!

Killer Pool

… as played in Cheltenham and explained in terms of the three player version (because it’s easiest).

Inevitably innuendo’s will occur. I make no apology, nor will I try to avoid them.

The balls are seperated into three different sections, 1-5, 6-10, 11-15.

Player one breaks off as usual.

When you pot a ball you take on that ball’s “Section” (for instance - potting a 4 means that 1-5 are now yours). You get to replace the ball you potted back on the spot. You are now a “Killer” - meaning you can now pot other peoples balls (which you can do even if the other sections are unassigned).

The idea of the game is to be the last person with your balls left on the table.

If you pot any ball, you get another go.

It is perfectly legal to pot your own ball (usually this is a bit silly, mind).

If you foul when potting a ball, then that ball comes back out and gets placed on the spot (typically this means you’ve potted the white as well).

Foul = Free ball, white ball in hand.

Foul = Any eliminated player takes a ball out of the pocket and places on the spot (they’re back in the game).

Additional Rules:

Sometimes you nominate that certain balls must go in certain pockets (5,10,15 into the middle was a variation we played). This then introduces a new “Foul” into the game, with some interesting consequences.

When we played 4 player we made the 13,14,15 to be bonus balls. If you potted them (as a killer) then they were replaced on the table and became your ball.

It’s really quite simple (probably simpler than I’ve made it sound), good fun, and playable by any number of people (up to 15, though that’d get quite “Fun” I’d imagine!).

Birthdays!

I can now, exclusively reveal, that my shopping on Monday was for birthday pressies. I couldn’t write that at the time because each of the three birthday people read this blog and I didn’t want them to know!

Anyway, Tuesday

… Was Alsion’s birthday. I sorted out a package to send up north (she now lives in Edinburgh) for her. It contained a glitery starry card, the Goonie’s leaving pressie and her birthday pressie, which was a tambourine.

We all also sung happy birthday to her whilst crowded around a phone in the Red Lion, just before the England 2-2 Sweden game kicked off.

Sarah, Rosy, Mahinda, Linden, Adrian & Nick were there to see a good first half performance followed by a naff second half performance.

A strange route home occurred, and it rained a bit!

Wednesday

Wednesday was Rosy’s birthday! (I got him a violin book and some dvd’s)

I started the day with some coffee and scones before working some.

I finished my problem *just* in time to go to hockey, which we lost 4-5 (I scored three, and we almost managed an amazing come back, only to be thwarted at the last…).

Onwards to the Jabez to watch the end of the Holland v Argentina (0-0) match. Linden brought in a huge chocolate birthday cake, and we all devoured it.

We headed out for a curry at Spicy Hut, which was mighty tasty, before I collapsed asleep at 0030 on Thursday morning…

Thursday

Thursday was Sarah’s birthday!

I bought a rather unimaginative Thornton’s box of chocolates and a nice card and we all ate at the wonderous “Bistro” on Burton Road.

It was all very pleasant indeed, the food, the company, the whole shebang went off nicely.

Afterwards we headed off to the met, for a quick drink before tiredness and hometime…

Today is Friday and I’m off to Cheltenham!

The World Cup

Has been happening recently, in case you’ve missed it!!

Monday

I’ve no idea what I did on Monday

Tuesday

Went off to see the “Long Cut” ’s album launch in the Mint Bar. They’re nowt special. Rosy won the tickets on XFM and the night was decent enough, plenty of dressed up Indie kids around!

Wednesday

a bit of hockey then a bit of ceilidh. Sarah was there, which was nice. Mahinda gave me big bruises on my arms with the basket, which wasn’t ;) .

Thursday

England 2-0 Trinidad & Tobago - not a great performance, but we’ll take it .

Watched the game in the confusingly named “The Pub”, just around the corner from work (since it kicked off at 5pm) with Jon, his housemate & Rosy. Afterwards we went to the Footage, then Ra!n (but they wouldn’t let me in as I was wearing an England top, and they had cancelled their quiz anyway) and so back to the Footage. Adrian and Nick turned up for the last two.

Friday

Decided to stay in and relax, so naturally went out for a drink with Sarah at the Old House at Home. :)

Saturday

Shopping then Cleaning then a party round Sarahs for her birthday. Called it a night around 2am, though the party was going on til 630!

Sunday

A quick breakfast at 230pm, followed by a quick trip down the supermarket and a BBQ at Linden’s. We were all very very tired, so called it an early one and went home around 9pm.

Monday

Sorted loads of stuff out during the day, including a bit of in town shopping. Pleased.

Played poker for the first time in aaaaaages! came 20th\236 people in an England v Sweden tournament and won $16. Which was nice. Afterwards watched “The Scorpian King” (3/5) mindless fun!

I’m English and therefore should mention the weather. It’s been hot, then rainy, then very rainy, then average, and now windy. Now it’s rainy again.

See ya!

Hot. Very very hot.

It’s been hot this week, at one point over 30 degrees, and as such Barbeques have occurred.

Monday

was a long time ago. I was off work with the illness I had last sunday. A few lemsips and the like went down nicely, and I was more or less fixed (though tired) by …

Tuesday

though football was cancelled so I planned on spending the evening in … That was until Mahinda txt’d me and Nick, Adrian, Rosy and I joined him and Si down the Red Lion for a last orders pint, hence leading us into…

Wednesday

when I tested my new found well-ness by playing hockey and going for a curry to “Celebrate” Sarah M’s last few days in Manchester. King Cobra of course… This meant I got home late, though we were taken into…

Thursday

by watching several episodes of The Mighty Boosh. Oops. Work then occurred followed by a date, which went well, and before you knew it it was

Friday

and the world cup had started.

I stayed in and caught up with some relaxation whilst watching Germany beat Costa Rica and Ecuador beat a poor poor Polish side. Anna arrived in the afternoon, and popped out for a few drinks with a friend of hers. A relatively early night gave me plenty of time to sleep before

Saturday

Where we managed to sneak in to a packed red lion to enjoy the England opener against Paraguay. A 1-0 victory kept us happy, though the performance was roundly criticised - and Sven is far too defensive. Mahinda, Rosy, Adrian, Nick, Sarah and Myself were there to enjoy it.

Afterwards all bar Mahinda sat outside in the glorious sunshine and had a few beers whilst deciding our next move, which turned out to be a BBQ at Adrian’s place.

We each ate lots and I left with Sarah around half 11, eschewing Linden’s suggestion of a trip to 42’s (Did you go in the end?). Before you knew it, it was

Sunday

I got a lift to the station, where I met Anna and trundled myself down to me grandma’s for another BBQ. I caught one of the late trains home, yawning all the way, and managing to stay up just long enough to drink a pint of water.

And today is now Monday!

The Tenth Floor…

Hello, I can’t remember much from last week, but let’s see what’s what.

Work

Work was ok, did a little bit on some new problem, though I’m slightly stuck on a minor point. I’m sure I’ll work it out later this week.

Sport

Due to football being cancelled, only arriving back from Riga on Monday, and a gig I’ve actually played no sport this week :/

The Cooper Temple Clause

On Wednesday, Emma, Mia, Rosy and I went to watch the cooper temple clause at the academy two.

The last time I went to see them they were very disappointing, but they had just lost 2 members and their live show was obviously suffering as a result.

However this time they were pretty awesome. Really enjoyed it, and some of the new stuff seems to be coming along quite nicely. Although it is *much* more poppy and less “Involved” than their old stuff.

Afterwards we tried to get into the big hands but they were charging quite a lot, so instead we went down to Emma’s place and watched “Little shop of Horrors !”

X-Men III

On Friday I went off to see X-Men III with a bunch of people. It’s a decent enough film. Not as good as the other two, but watchable (4/5)

Afterwards we headed back to mine and watched several episodes of the Mighty Boosh, before finishing with “Dude, Wheres my Car?”

The Ball

Saturday saw the annual Mugss ball. Without going into too much detail (the title of the post is directly relevant to this part of the blog entry) - it was ace!

There was : Eating, Drinking & Cavorting, and an after ball party at Emma’s flat.

Illness

Sunday saw me wake up with a nasty cold… which currently has me sitting at home rather than being at work (it’s Monday today) it’s definitely getting better now, though, and I reckon I’ll be back in tomorrow.

That seems to be everything. I’ve no idea what I did last Thursday and that appears to be the only day left out - I can live with that.
