A Comment on New Years Eve!

I’ve noted a lot of people getting het up about how they don’t enjoy new years for one reason or another, and I just don’t understand it.

A few people feel pressure into going to a party, many of these people get worried about not having anyone to kiss on NYE etc etc…. and I have to say that, for me, this is really not what New Years is all about.

It’s a celebration of the previous year and a looking forward to the next year… Whether or not you’re an optimistic person or not (and I am) obviously has a bearing on this, but even then it’s best spent surrounded by a small select bunch of your favourite freinds who have shared and will share some of these experiences with you.

For me, it’s always been about spending time with your mates, and getting pissed to bring it in as you mean to continue. It’s especially important to me because it’s essentially the first time I get to see my mates after I age - Having never been able to spend my birthday with my mates (and I’ll defend the ideal that “Christmas is for the Family” to the hilt, so it is my own fault!) it obviously raises the significance of the event.

Small group of mates; Alcohol; Music…. what’s not to enjoy?

Starting as you mean to go on should be the issue here, and I intend to have a good time, and spend time with my mates in 2006. I can’t wait for this year to unfold.

Anyway, that’s my take on the matter. Now cheer up you Grumps!

  1. Hurrah for Pete!!

I’m in your boat. I feel exactly the same about New Year celebrations. Of course having someone to kiss would be nice (wouldn’t it always!?!) but being surrounded by fab people having a fab time and celebrating hopefully a fab year ahead is what its all about!

  2. It’s just midnight!!

But I still want to differ on this one (I am allowed to, right?). I don’t think I enjoy it because I don’t get to spend the time with my friends. In a “normal” week I go out 7 times with 5 different groups of friends. This works cause people do stuff on different nights. If more than one thing is happening on a night I go to 2/3 if possible. On NYE there’s usually about 10 parties that I want to be at. But no transport. So I can’t be where I want with who I want.

It’s taken me years to work out why I don’t like it, and now I’ve worked it out I intend to fix it for next year. I’m not sure how yet. Same as this year I worked out I don’t like Bonfire Night. I will get round that next year and like it too.

There is the dream of knowing these are the people who are going to make next year ace and being with them, but that’s just why I thought I didn’t like it, not actually why I don’t like it on reflection.
