Sunday Relaxation

I’ve written 4 posts today, the most interesting of which is the second… so don’t miss it!

Sunday involved sitting around a lot, relaxing after the show. Pam gave us a lift down the supermarket were some stuff was bought and I started cooking a roast dinner at about 6pm.

Mahinda and Alsion came round and we had a huge feast.

Linden and Ed popped round later and we had drinks whilst listening to music.

Then L&E&M went and we watched Leprechaun and spaced until the wee early hours.

we had a drawing contest, the rules of which Rosy DID NOT UNDERSTAND. and therefore he lost.

Bed around 2am. nice.

Show Time!

This is verbose and I make no apologies.

So, around two weeks ago Justin Morley put a post down the banter list asking for an acoustic guitarist to play a minor part in his revamped score of G&S’ “Trial By Jury”; “Rock Trial”.

I replied and spent a hectic two weeks learning the part, Dress Rehearsal was only my third rehearsal so it was all crammed in a bit - but I learnt it.

and this week we showed it, and it was fantastic.

Wednesday
Dress Rehearsal.

Went down to the RNCM after spending most of the day in town trying to sort a few things out whilst buying a new pair of black jeans - neither really accomplished.

Nothing much exciting to say about the dress, except it went on for HOURS. (Well the techie bit of it did) The actual dress rehearsal was an abbreviated affair as everyone was getting pretty narky by then and we wanted to be done in time to catch last orders at the RNCM bar.

Which we did; just.

A bunch of people went off to tribeca, but I couldn’t be bothered so went home instead!

Thursday

Opening Night.

I guess I should introduce the band;

Justin : Wrote the show and played some tasty lead guitar parts.

Greg : Drummer, enconsed in a perspex cage. Apparently some people thought that was for the audiences safety as he can sometimes throw the drumsticks around a bit!

Chris : 6-string Bassist.

Lizzie : Attractive Keyboardist

Me : Acoustic Guitar

Cassie, Shiny Rich, Random Foreign Muso guy : Brass section

Anyway, a few nerves around before we walk in to the studio theatre and take our places, but the show goes off without a hitch and is pretty succesful.

Great Fun too.

Afterwards the opening night party takes place at the scubar, where a boat race occurs (the crew team crushing the cast team, mainly thanks to Si Glass’ anchor leg) and Pizza is consumed (from which Kate insisted we wouldn’t return (of course we were going to!)) much merriment before we all decamp to the curry house (King Cobra, a fine establishment).

of course, I’d already eaten so satisfied myself with a beer, and then found that everyone only ate half their curry anyway, so had a bit of a nice mix of food too.

I felt very very fat though, especially after the earlier pizza.

Friday

The friday late night show was a new one, filled with people who signed up for tickets at the last moment. I should point out that, largely thanks to Alsion, almost every show was sold out - unusual for a mugss production, but then this was an unusual (and much better!) mugss production.

The upshot here is that we had two shows to put on.

Justin took the cast upstairs for a bit of a warm up whilst the rest of the band hung around downstairs chatting and waiting to go on.

At about 10 to 8 (the show started at 8) we start hearing a ringing noise. At first we ignore it - I’d always kinda assumed there were little ringing noises back stage for telling the cast when they needed to be ready to go on and etcetra, but this was kinda irregular rather than an automated noise.

So we finally figure out that it’s coming from the lift!

It quickly transpires that no less than 18 of the cast (including a principle or two) have become stuck in the lift! the engineer is called out but they must’ve been in there for 10-15 mins! and then they can’t get downstairs because they’re not allowed to be seen by the public in costume before the show starts - the rest of us are busy laughing about it whilst trying not to - because the cast are understandably a bit het up about it!

an “Inside the lift” version of events can be found on Linden’s blog!

we go on 10-15 mins late, and play another blinding show. It is definitely the best musical I’ve ever had the pleasure to “See”.

a very shortened interval and we’re back on stage again.

a more muted crowd, but a decent performance.

The plan this evening was for everyone to go for a big chinese… But all the groups got fractured and a number of us weren’t hungry anyway, Linden took Celia and friend to the chinese whilst a few of us went to the Font bar.

As we arrived at the Font bar our entrance was barred by a couple of rather large bouncers as it is “Closed”. This is made all the more perplexing by the fact that we can see a group of people we know (including Raman, Adam, Mark and Jenn) just the other side of the glass.

Luc, Mahinda and I made our way down to the Salisbury.

Latterly Adam, Mark, Jenn joined us there along with Alsion and a few of her mates.

We hung around until 130am, though by then I was dead on my feet and slinked off home for some much needed sleep.

Saturday

Closing Night and the Old Soaks.

Spent most of saturday sleeping or shopping and made my way into the RNCM for about seven’o'clock.

the first show was alright, we were mainly playing to an audience of people’s parents I think, certainly Linden and Leila had such representatives, and I think maybe Justin did too!

but the second show was awesome.

We played to a bunch of drunken old soaks - these are people who have been in mugss, or know people in mugss - and they’re usually very drunk, and very vocal.

This was no exception - there was banter all the way through (a mexican wave before the beginning!) and it was fantastic.

The performers (me included) seemed to have an extra spring in their step and the show was spectacular.

A Fantastic experience.

afterwards I helped shift some stuff into Justin’s car and then went to find people in the bar.

There were a litany of people I knew there, almost everytime I turned around I got into a new conversation.

For instance, Matt and Pam had come up, Rosy, Adrian, Emma had been to watch it, and that’s not even mentioning the people actually in it or crewing it! I didn’t know where to turn next.

I had a nice surprise in that it turned out that the musicians were actually paid for their performance… Sam bought me a pint on behalf of the commitee. nice one :)

much drinking later and we’re all discussing “where next?”

James Heaver was hosting the after show, but most of us had grumbling stomachs and a small group of 8 or so meandered down to King Cobra.

I can’t remember who was in this group… Leila, Sarah and Jen P. were, and the discussion revolved around affixing suffixes to things to make them either very bad or very good. (things like -atastrophe, -asaster, -opia, -olicious etc….).

As we ordered we noticed a few more mugss arriving.

and then a few more..

and then a few more…

and then a few more….

and then some nuns…..

and then a few more mugss…..

When we left there were around 40 of us there, 35 (or so) of us all sat on one extremely long table. It was fantastic.

Upon leaving we were all feeling a bit naq’d so Pam (who was staying at ours), Rosy and I got a taxi home and watched a bit of spaced (I think).

_That_ was show week. Brilliant.

The Show

A brief summary of the show, from an acoustic guitarists perspective.

Band comes on. We have to look like we’re busy so all randomly play an “A” (we’d actually mostly tuned up before the doors opened) the line up is (L->R) Greg, Lizzie, Me at the back - Justin, Chris at the front and the four brass out to the side.

Lizzie waits for green light and plays a bassy chord, Justin stands in the spotlight and plays an intro…

and then the interlude is off!

people run in from the left and dance around in the middle before finding their positions. The chorus is organised into different “Types” of people, this includes Punks, Geeks, Chavs, the Elderly etc etc…. the geeks are first on (one is in a star trek uniform).

The jurers, usher etc… also come on.

a few introductory songs are sung that outline the plot (not really important).

I play quite a bit during these numbers (1a 1b and 1c)

Then the defendent comes on and sings a couple 2 & 3 - I don’t play at all here, there are some nice touches in these songs including a “Pretty Vacant” nod… “tic a tac” or something.

The judge comes on and sings a couple 4 & 5 - again with the touches - including house of the rising sun. I play a bit in 4 and quite a lot in 5. There’s a fun bit in 4 where it all goes a bit twee. The soaks audience loved it.

Song 6 see’s the cowgirls, including the rather attractive triumvirate of Bex, LW and Frankie, come on. I think these are the “Bridesmaids” in the original. the Judge (Pete Roberts) plays my guitar whilst I stand back and watch. The cowgirls finish up standing in front of me, so any vision of the audience is lost.

Song 7&8&9 are all about the judge and jury falling in love with the “bride” who came on late in song 6, and the defendent falling out with everyone. I play snatches. Is “ahhh… Sly Dogs ahhh….. Sly Dogs” in one of these songs - probably!

I may have some of the following in the wrong order

Song 10- “I’ll marry one today and t’other tomorrow” - I play a little bit.

Song 11- play lots at the beginning “Marry two girls at one time is burglar-ee”

Song 12 - a nice dilemma? quality bit in the middle where everyone goes silent and then the cast all start doing rhythm sounds like sighing, rustling paper etc… building up into a drummy bit with two drummers and then a triamphant return to the song. The show doesn’t really let up after this one. I don’t play during this one so can stand back and enjoy it.

Song 13 - Bride tells how she loves defendent (or something) I play no part. “Let’s Get him drunk and try” “With all respect I do object” “I do object” “I don’t object” “I’ll marry her myself!”

Song 14 - Joy Unbounded! with a good fun ending which I play lots in.

then we repeat the last three pages again (the best bit) whilst everyone leaves.

for the last show we got an encore and played the interlude again.

I don’t suppose many people will read this post, but if you did - good for you!

Dull bit of the week

Quite a bit to write on the latter part of the week so I’ll briefly sum up the early week:

Monday : Work

Tuesday: Work - Finished! Met band bloke in a pub, Mahinda, Mark and Luc popped down too.

Still busy

I figured out that between Marking \ PhD Work and rehearsing I did an 80 hour week last week. not overly pleasant, but this week isn’t likely to be any different with the show an’ all (I *am* looking forward to it quite a lot though!)

anyway, to catch you up:

Friday: Work \ Pub (for two) \ Marking
I went to the pub as a guy from Adrian’s office had secured himself a Post Doc. in Durham. Friday Evening + Celebration = pub’o'clock.
I then went home (after a nice kebab) and did 2 hours marking. Peep show was pretty good.

Saturday: Marking
Sat in the front room all day doing marking whilst watching:
Wigan v Arsenal
England V New Zealand
GB v Australia
and all the other results coming in (Liverpool won 3-0).
Adrian and Emma came round later on, whilst I carried on marking.

Sunday: A bit of marking, but the main part of the day was taken up with the rehearsal 3-9pm. Tiring.
Mahinda and Lynda came round in the evening and we watched some Spaced and some Family guy. I made White Russians.

Go-Karting

As some of you already know, I arranged a rather large go-karting event over the weekend. Well It went well, and here’s the full story!

Warning : This post is *super* long! read a segment, make a comment then have some tea (unless you’re Alsion), then read the next segment.

and so it begins…

Pre-Karting

Woke up far too early for my hangover when insisted on making me bleary eyed and slow moving until at least 2 ibuprofen’s, a coffee and a McDonald’s breakfast later (courtesy of Mahinda who’d phoned from said establishment on his way to mine).

The reason for this was, of course, my visitation of the beer fest the night before.

Mahinda arrived around 10 or so and we made our way down to the local asda for some beer\snacks\pizza shopping.

Suitably loaded up, we make our way back to mine and collect Rosy and Jez and make our way there.

Upon arriving I’m greeted by the happy site of around 6 other cars all containing people from our group. After a short discussion they open up the place and let us in.

Upon being allowed in the arena we discovered that they’d double booked us, I had a few words which included the exchange

“If you didn’t ask for an exclusive event then we offer no guarantee”
“I did ask for an exclusive event”

cue much mumbling about how the event would be better with 10 others (it wasn’t) there, I gave them a few words and then settled down to sorting out the group.

10/15 minutes later and no-one else had yet arrived. concerned; I remembered that it may be a good idea to go and check outside, where upon 15 people looked up and I heard

“ah look, they were on time!”

from Andi, I think.

I lead them inside to sign up on our sheet and phoned around the late-comers, the main one being (of course) Brian. (more on which, soon.)

Matt Lees and Jon Roberts were two of the last people to arrive, but both comfortably on time.

I hung around waiting for Benn, Keegan & Brian. Benn was 5 minutes late (and had been less than 5mins away when he’d got lost) and they wouldn’t let him race - which was irritating… the other two were no shows I got a message arriving from keegan, and as for brian; well…..

The Story of Brian

Mike offered to pick up the two lads who were coming into the station - cue a flurry of early saturday morning text messages.

prompt replies from me, joel & mike lead to just one mystery….

What time was Brian arriving?

leaving it as a phone left at home \ switched off or simply brian asleep on a train Mike phones me around 12 pointing out that we’ve had no word from him, that he’s not there and pam, joel and himself needed to get a wriggle on if they were to arrive on time.

Finally biting the bullet around 1215 we agree that if brian turns up now he’ll have to get a cab.

Rosy, Mike, Mahinda & I are all still trying to get through to him.

1245 comes and goes with no word from the big man….

4pm, the go-karting has finished and still… no word!

by this point I’m half expecting to find him in the Lass, but

6pm comes and goes… and *still* no brian.

7pm - Rosy gets a phone call….

apparently the lanky lad had put on his best southerners drinking hat on the friday night and had gone out to get well and truely rat-arsed. Upon arriving at home he stuck on the cricket (and - at some point - hattrick!) but by 11am had passed out (he wouldn’t have made it anyway leaving at that time!)

He then woke at 5pm and spent the next two hours being sick - and then called us at 7pm with a phone call that included the now infamous line

“I’m a f****** disgrace!”

This did lead to Mahinda (in a comedy voice - more later) and Impurity (and perhaps others) leaving “You’re a f****** disgrace”) on his answer phone, and this rather amusing post by me whilst drunk at 3AM.

WHAT are you doing getting sick and hungover instead of turning up to the f****** greatest boozer in the world ever?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Why man?! Why?!

If I were you I would most certainly be hanging my head in shame!

Don’t you think so?

You’ve let yourself down there, Mate.

;)

all tongue in cheek, of course ;)

Anyway - 31 out of 34 (a full list can be seen by viewing the results (in a seperate post)) is not bad. we donned our blue suits, and got ready to race.

The Heats

This is very much from my perspective since half the time you were racing or waiting to race so many of the heats were missed - viewing wise it was quite hard to tell who people are anyway!

Excited, we all lined up for our first taste of action with a couple of practice laps.

I am completely perturbed by the experience… Go-Karting is not how I’d imagined it! - lots of fun though I’m definitely not feeling competitive by the time my first race comes around.

Race 1

I learn that I’m going to start from pole.

My first three laps are rubbish as I start to figure out what the heck I’m doing… I drop into last place but I get some free track to figure out what I’m doing and I put a good lap in and catch up andi and wayne in front of me… too late to make a move on the final lap though Andi happily obliges and drops into the pits a lap early.

Neither Wayne nor I can quite believe it and wayne looks behind him in puzzlement, and I shrug back. I finish 4th.

between my first and second race several comedy clashes and crashes occur with only one dangerous one, when a kart plowed into the tyre wall just as the marshall was going to push someone else out of it. He had to jump out of the way sharpish - though to be fair no red lights (warning sign meaning “Go Slow!” had come on - it was a scary moment though.

Race 2

The second race wasn’t much better, but I started from 5th and ended 4th. I think this was due to someone going into the tyre wall.

Race 3

The 3rd race is when I started doing alright, started 4th. finished 3rd (I think this is the one where I held off a dertermined challenge from Dan B, and pulled out my best passing move of the day)

Race 4

I think this was my best race. I need to bring some context into it though.

Just before my fourth race the marshall called me aside as one of the organiser of the event and said that could I have a word with my fellow racer’s to stop bashing into each other. His words were something like:

“They’ve all had three races now, so they should be able to avoid the collisions, it looks like they’re just doing it for fun”

So I went around everyone and made a mental note to make sure I avoided collision in the next race.

Starting in third I knew I had Ed Lea and Jez Hook in the same race.

We were then involved in an almighty scrap for third place. unfortunately I was eased out - Usually do to having to stomp on the breaks to avoid colliding with either of the mentioned pair… A shame because otherwise I think this was my best race (my best lap of the day was the one lap I didn’t have to brake to avoid a big smash in!)

as an example - the end of the race (though this was the one avoided crash that didn’t cost me track position) I’m tailing Jez and clearly had a better speed coming out the hairpin (the one thing (seriously the only thing!) I mastered) so I’ve gone full pelt to try and take him only the guy in front of him (Ed) crashes over the start finish and into the tyre wall. Jez skids and comes to a full horizontal stop about 5 yards in front of me as I’m nearing 40mph (This was literally as jez crossed the line)

I slam on the brakes and stop inches from Jez’s car.

Could’ve been very nasty!

to be fair I’d have done well to learn to drive around people but my first instinct is to slam on the brakes (which means the guy behind get’s a chance to pass me whilst the guy I’ve stopped for will probably get away before me too). One to learn for next time!

I finish 5th :/.

Between this race and the next another incident occurs, this one involving Emma and “A bloke from the other group”

I missed it (I was using the facilities) but had reports when I got back.

Apparently the fella had passed her on a red light (not allowed) and therefore cost her track position. I didn’t see this either, but I would say that many of the other group were not racing within the spirit of the event…

Emma came storming up into the viewing gallery and literally let’s loose on this fella, I mean shouting in his face the full works. She later said that had she not been worried about losing her TKD license she would’ve broken his nose.

I arrived seconds later to a stunned silence and had the situation explained by Mike T.

This was the only real fight of the day, later on during the presentation ceremony, as the guy stepped up to take 2nd place on the podium Emma was booing and shouting stuff like “Only because he cheated” etc etc…..

AAAaaaaaaaaannyway, back to the racing.

Race 5

Heat 5 rolled along and was pretty much a non-event. As chance would have it we’d all be placed in order of our fastest laps, so none of us challenged each other and it was all very comfortable.

I got a yellow flag after a quick first lap for burning the clutch. I pretty much took it easy around the rest of the track since 3rd was miles behind and I was a fair way behind 1st - I regret that now as I reckon had I pushed it I may have just nabbed a 26er.

started 2nd. Finished 2nd.

racing over for most of us we change out of our blue suits and await the finals.

we start discussing about how many of us Cannot Wait to Do This Again.

me, Definitely Included.

Finals

Some other notable performances included:

Pete Gould - At one point had the fastest lap until Matt Lees found his form, despite some storming performances finished 13th overall and missed out on a finals place

Emma Sutphakdee - Top Girl, by a looooong way

Pam Ward, Sarah Midgely - For both aiming to get under 30 second laps, only to manage getting under 29 seconds as well

then the finals

the names are read out.

B-Team Finalists… start your engines!

Adam Hebden (starting 6th)
Ross Connell (pole)
Wayne Field (3rd)
Mahinda (5th)
+two random people.

Ross storms off with a blistering start and is never challenged. he romps home to first with some great lap times.

Similarly Adam finds it difficult to pass, and finishes 6th, though not by a long way.

Wayne and Mahinda collide on the last corner as Mahinda is lining up second place - unlucky rather than anything else - and basically this loses them both the chance of a podium finish. Wayne corrects first and finishes 4th, Mahinda, despite some storming laps previously comes in 5th.

Some of the quality in this race frightens me, but it pales compared to two driving exhibitions that take place in the A final.

the names are read out;

Matt Lees (pole)
Allan Fairle-Clarke (4th)
Jon Roberts (5th)

Matt zooms off into the lead and no one can catch him. The ex-semi-pro karting driver shows his quality and wins at a canter. A deserved champion.

Allan F-C is taken out in the first lap, on the second corner by the guy starting in third. (not one of us) Jon and another fella zoom past, whilst the guy whose taken him out drops to fifth but is largely unaffected.

The marshall comes over to kick him out of the tyre wall and Allan is back racing, but half a lap (at least) behind.

2 or 3 laps later I looked down and noticed that the gap was smaller. Allan was catching up, and not slowly either…

2 laps later on and he’s on the tail of 5th…

he takes him, and then starts closing in on 4th!

2 or 3 laps later, and he’s taken that too! (Jon *was* 4th, finished 5th)

3rd is still too far ahead, but a stunning drive landed Allan 4th place, the biggest cheer of the day (when he overtook the guy who took him out in the first place) and “memorable drive of the day”. Top bombing.

this final also saw 2nd and 3rd have a long battle which eventually ended with 3rd taking 2nd with 3 laps to go. As he passed he gave his opponent the w***** sign, though to my eyes all he’d done was protect his position.

The guy who finished 2nd was the one who’d pissed emma off earlier too….!

Onto the presentations and Matt and Ross take their well deserved dues. Unfortunately 2nd and 3rd in both races were taken by people from the “Other” group, it would’ve been great to have an exclusive event I reckon - but it was still absolutely fantastic.

We finished with a huge group shot, as Andi struggled under my weight (I will link to the picture when I get it online - it’s blurry but decent!)

we step outside and rapidly sort out the cars - a group or two to my place, a group or two to hotels and a few people straight off to the lass.

A fine event.

But the day was not over yet!

Post Karting

A quick trip home, only blighted by the lack of my camera, which I’d misplaced during my final “Collect Money-athon” which saw everyone pay in full except one person (someone owe’s me £15 still…) It turned out that Jez had it all along!

Andi, Rosy, Toby, Adrian, Emma, Jez, Jon, Adam and non-racer Matt (Earl_CG) all piled round my place.

a quick viewing of the watch indicated that the England match was kicking off in less than 5 minutes, and therefore that we had absolutely no chance of making it to the pub in time.

We stayed, therefore, got changed if necessary and ate some pizza (which rosy cooked) we started on the beers and watched a fine first half which ended with the scores level.

the cab arrived at half-time.

or rather, it was supposed to.

The minibus took 15 minutes longer than it should’ve done and went the slowest route (not the longest though!) to the Lass by trapsing down oxford road and thereby encountering the lights of rusholme.

the net result of this was

— Much whinging from Andiell
— missing the first 15 mins of the second half. This included the argies 2-1 goal :/

so we finally got to the lass to watch the last half hour, what a great game!

Crouch was getting cheers everytime he touched the ball, and Owen’s late winner ensured general happiness.

By this point there were so many of us in the pub… other latecomers included Ben, Anders & Jird - they were certainly ones that I saw but there could’ve been any number of people there!

I then watched the rugby league whilst chatting to a couple of the guys (we heavily beat new zealand. Which was nice) before heading to the bar to talk to a load of others. It was generally great.

Mahinda left sometime early to go meet up with another group, but before he did something amusing happened to his speech.

He was, in fact, rapidly losing his voice, leading to some very amusing pub banter, what I can only assume is a very amusing phone message on brian’s phone and basically just general amusement.

By the time Mahinda came back to the pub his voice had gotten even worse… as a quick chat to withington-resident Natalie showed!

A bunch of us then made it down to fifth ave.

We went early, to avoid disappointment.

Inside, and for the second club night in a row, I discovered one of my students. This is not a good thing. What is a worse thing is when one of your mates goes and tries to pull her. The exchange was something like:

Andi “Hi!”
Girl “I’m afraid I can’t talk to you because your friend is my tutor!”
Andi “Ok” *notes boyfriend turning up and swiftly departs*

I cannot remember much more to be honest, though there was plenty of drinking, plenty of dancing, and many people leaving early.

the latter of which lead me to searching for Jez for about half an hour before recieving a phone call.

“Where are you”
“Don’t Know!”
“What can you see”
“Bush, Bush, Tree, Road, Bus, Tree, Owens Park, Bush, Tree, Road, Bus, Bus”
“Hang on, Owens park?”
“Yeah, Owen’s Park, Bush, Tree, Tree King Kebab.”
“King Kebab?”
“Yeah, Bus, Bus, Tree, Pizza Champion…. ooooh! Pizza Champion… I’m going for pizza!”
“Ok, go there and wait there til I find you”

which I then did.

Home - More Beer - tv….

A poker game started up (one which I was just too late to join :/) and went on… and on…. and on….

particularly memorable was Ben passing out as dealer, leaving me to the last two competitors (Mahinda and Andi) and a whole load of:

“check… check…. check…. check…..check…..check…..check”

ARGH!

finally the game finished and, of course, the poker professional won - Mahinda. ;)

Bed swiftyly followed - around 430AM. Had I been more awake I’d have probably stayed up later and watched the cricket! I’m not sure whether this would’ve been a good thing…. :)

The Morning After

Tea\Tea\Cricket\Tea and then a bunch of us went down to get a hattrick breakfast.

Much needed.

Tiredness sets in and I go through rehearsal for “Rock Trial” before spending a quiet night in.

Great weekend.

Cheers to everyone who turned up and helped to make it so memorable!!

Cheers to everyone who’s managed to read the entire report - I’m genuinely impressed!

The Results:
I would like to say I improved alot as the day went on - and think I would do lots better were we to go again ;)

Here’s how it worked.

we had lots of heats and had a points total which determined our final position (as recorded here) the pos 7-12 then raced in a B final and 1-6 raced in the A final.

there were 31 of us attendent, but due to a mess up on their behalf we had 10 “Outsiders” racing with us. they’d clearly been before so they nabbed a fair amount of the top positions. I’m leaving the outsiders off the list.

the overall winner, however, was one of our own.

The lap times do not include the finals, and I’m pretty sure (for example) that Allan, Ross and Mahinda all set their best times in their respective finals!

Beer Fest (2) - Twice

I thought I’d get this post done seperately to the weekend post, simply because this weekend included the Go-Karting which I’m going to mark as a “Major Event”

Also, I’ve edited the date (it is actually the 14th today) so that I can get all the posts in the right order!

Anyway…

I’ll keep this brief:

Thursday & Friday : went to the UMIST beer fest. I don’t remember much about what I drunk (though on friday I had some awful concocion first that lead to my next three drinks all tasting the same) and I got a free glass.

Beer Wise Thursday was the best day as they’d started to severly run out on the friday!

People wise, Friday was the best cos most of the good people from thursday (Mahinda, Linden, Ed, Alsion et all) had turned up on the friday and were joined by Jez, Kate_s, Rosy, etc… sorry if I’ve missed you out. Kebabage on the way home!!

Adrian & Emma pulled out at the last moment though (Weak!)

Friday I didn’t bother going into work as I tidied the house and picked Jez up from the station, I was also hectically sorting out stuff for the weekend… a write up of which (which will mean this post gets pretty much ignored I reckon) will follow…

Beer Fest (1)

Tuesday night saw the first beer festival of the week, as I headed out to meet Mahinda, Luc and Mark (and briefly, Alsion & Rodders) at The Font Bar.

Several beers were available, and I managed to try every single one (and even a perry!) due to much sharing of drinks.

Now, I’m going to be slightly nerdy and rate the beers that were there. Mahinda also participated and his grades are also given.

The first bit is the description given on the paper where they were all listed, italics are my comments.

Bazen’s Pacific
Part of the infamous Salford Brewing Syndicate, this light session bitter goes down a treat.
–Hoppy and a little harsh 4/10 (M:7)–

Bank Top Dark Mild
This is a bloody gorgeous dark mild, and has unusually strong character.
–Nowt special, but a nicely roasted dark mild 7/10 (M:8)–

Roosters Zulu
A fantastic new Porter (bit like Guiness only nicer).
–Mild but weak 6/10 (M:6)–

Millstone True Grit
Strong pale ale from the Brummie lads Nick and John. An absolute CAMRA favourite.
–Nice for a hoppy pint. Aged well 7/10 (M:6)–

Bryson’s Wheat Beer
This is a fine example of an English wheat beer.
–Wheaty, Passable 6/10 (M:5)–

Phoenix Monkeytown Mild
Smooth, creamy, dark and very hard to find in pubs
–Smooth, but unremarkable.6/10 (M:7)–

Phoenix Wobbly Bob
Legendary ale from the Phoenix Brewery, only really found at beer festivals.
–Nice. Strong. 8/10 (M:8) LSOA–

Hawkhead Gold
A hoppy, golden ale from the heart of the Lake District.
–Watery and Hoppy but nice for all that 6.5/10 (M:4)–

Hopstar Dunn Chasing
This is a very rare golden bitter.
–Hoppy beer, gets tiresome 6/10 (M:6)–

Owl Brewery Yon Owl
Pale bitter that is very easy on the palette.
–Almost Lager. Weak. 5/10 (M:5)–

Facers Crabtree
Legendary light ale and beer of the festival 2005.
–A bit lacking but eminently quaffable 6/10 (M:7)–

J.W.Lees Moonraker
Strong Ale only to be found in a handful of John Willie’s pubs.
–Taste’s like vinegared (red) wine.2/10 (M:6)–InOT

some perry or other
(no description)
–rubbish. like really really cheap white wine1/10 (M:2)–

and that was that - an enjoyable night out!

Wednesday I stayed in and watched sheff wed lose to cardiff and did a load of marking.

Beer Fest (2) is tonight.

A Whole Load of Stuff

I haven’t updated for a while and it’s not cos not a lot has been going on, rather it’s because my internet has been broken!

Anyway; that’s now fixed and I’m now here!

Thursday:

Work then ended up going down to Solomon Grundy’s with Mahinda and his housemate Helen (of the small variety).

“It looks huge in your hands”

- Rosy to Helen. It’s actually in reference to this but I found it funny.

Had a few beers and chatted for a while… good night in the pub with mates I thought, don’t really do that often enough (where it doesn’t end in going out afterwards, I mean!)

Friday

Really had no clue what to do after work so ended up taking Mahinda’s suggestion of the cinema.

Not being interested in The Corpse Bride (being a Tim Burton movie I can predict how it’s going to go, and stop-motion irritates me a little) Rosy and I decided to go and watch Saw II, A horror film.

Saw II was decent enough, but it’s exactly the same as the the first one and therefore fairly predictable (where as the first one certainly was not!) that’s a rash of ok’ish but not great films I’ve seen so I’d quite like to see a pretty good one now, please. Another 3/5.

Afterwards rosy and I went on a long walk to go get some cash (Mahinda’s film had not finished yet) eventually stopping off at the HSBC on King Street. We headed back towards the great northern and stopped to get a burger (indeed from the very same takeaway that Waynef once memorably publically scorned).

It was at this point that Mahinda called us to inform that the film had finished. We agreed that The Knott bar would be a fine destination. (Ignore the comments on that page, the knott bar is a fine pub with a huge selection of good beers).

We did the beer bottle challange, during which I found I was vastly inadequate compared to Mahinda.

We managed to scab a table after 10 mins or so of waiting. In attendence were Jordan H, Paul K, NewPam, Si Glass, Myself, Mahinda, Rosy. The conversation was definitely two paced. One side of the table was talking about politics, University Politics and the laws on analogue signals. Whilst our side of the table was talking about the sorts of beer we liked best.

I tried out a new beer.

Chimay do a fine range of beers, Blue, Red and White. During the Beer Bottle Challenge it had turned out I’d never done White Chimay. So I tried it out, and it was mighty tasty, especially for a Wheat beer (they don’t normally float my boat).

I also had some sort of random bitter and finished off with my favourite, a bottle of Duvel (I think this is a pretty good picture!) before heading off home.

nice.

Saturday

or… the day of the farcical hockey match!

It all started around 11am when I flicked on the old computer for the first time since tuesday to find that our broadband had messed up and was no longer working.

This was unfortunate as I needed to check where our game was taking place.

I thought it was at the Parrs wood girls school so we headed down and waited around for people to turn up.

Half an hour later and the only other person to have turned up was Sleazy Rich and a load of girls in hockey gear (which suggested that it wasn’t going to be our team using that pitch!).

Fortunately sleazy and brought along his girlfriend who gave us a lift down to the Armitage sports centre where we found out that our game was schelduled to kick off at 230pm at the girls high school next to platt fields. It was 3pm.

We turned up at the school and quickly discovered that only 4 team members had turned up (we made it 7) which meant that we had forfeited the game and decided to share the players there out and play a friendly.

This gave us a total of around 20 players, including the umpires and the dad of the oppositions keeper (who’d never played before).

This, of course, lead to a tactical nightmare, which eventually lead to our team playing something like a 2-3-4 formation.

Now, our opposition had turned up only in Green. Which also happens to be the disbury colours. No one had foreseen this possibility, it appears, as we had all been told to turn up in Green. Of course both teams couldn’t play in green so I ended up playing in my Jumper (not pleasant at all!) and rosy ended up playing for the opposition.

the game railed along and for all that, we weren’t playing too badly. we were 1-3 down (our goal coming from a flick penalty scored by the keepers dad) but we were unlucky to be losing.

Come half time and we trudge off and try and get some tactics sorted out. That really doesn’t change alot and our formation appears to be something of a 2-2-5 for the second half.

we attack regularly and it appears to be a matter of time before we pull one back when…

Their striker closes in on goal and puts it past our keeper, Tom.

Tom runs out and just saves it but the striker follows through and strikers the keeper with his stick (allegedly).

Tom tells the striker to “F… Off”

Striker Pushes Tom

Tom Punches Striker

Striker Punches Tom (In the helmet!)

everyone wades in and breaks it up, but they keep at it and the game is abandoned. Overall it was a big pile of Pants.

The next day I phoned up to see if we were needed for the 7’s team again, but it seems like they’ve filled it with 6’s, which is all well and good for making up the numbers - but if they want a 7’s team to thrive then they ought to get the 7’s team members in there first I reckon. I declined the opportunity to be on the subs bench (I’d rather watch Man Utd V Chelsea than stand in the rain watching a hockey game wondering if I’m going to come on) For me this is not how a club is run, and I’m rather pissed off with them!

Anyway back to saturday.

Rosy, Emma and I headed on out to the Wythenshawe Park Bonfire Night and Firework Extravaganza!.

There we met up with a bunch of people including Linden, Ed, Kate_s, Matt Lees, Cattac, Mahinda, Benn and others (I’m not going to name them all) and watched the surprisingly short show.

It was alright.

Afterwards the three of us headed down to the funfair, but it was well busy, so that didn’t last long.

We walked back across the park and went to Kate_s’s house (via Heaton Mersey to pick up Adriandand my house to pick up wine) for wine\cheese shenanigans.

the gathering ensued and we left fairly late (3am or so?) I think I may have watched a film or something when I got in, but I don’t rightly remember.

Sunday

phew! that’s a lot of typing. It may be an idea for you to go and get a cup of tea or have a swift toilet break before continuing…

are you back?

good… I shall continue….

Sunday started off with a quick visit down to the supermarket - much needed! we’ve been running short on…. well pretty much everything… over the past week due to the litany of things that we’ve had to do throughout the evenings.

shopping done I settled down to a good slice of footie action.

First there was Chasetown 1-1 Oldham.

A good game, where a giantkilling was close (although it never actually looked likely) I disagree with many of the reports who say that Chasetown were the better team. They weren’t, but a lot of people let their rose-tinted romance glasses get in the way.

They certainly did play above their station though, and Oldham below there’s. A day earlier a similar clash between Colchester and some other team from Chasetown’s division ended up 9-1, which should give you an example of how good this result was for the tiny staffordshire community.

The the main course.

Man United 1-0 Chelsea

quite literally a game where there was no possible bad result for me. Come the last ten minutes though I was quite glad to see Chelski finally defeated… they have definitely been looking weaker of late, and maybe this’ll make the old prem. a little more interesting.

Anyway, after the action we headed on down to Mahinda’s place and eventually found ourselves on a bus (it had taken about 20/25 mins of waiting, and we’d already told Linden that we were going to walk it instead (to which she offered a lift, but by then we had finally sourced ourselves a belated bus)).

Alsion did the cooking, and mighty fine cooking it was.

Some sort of vege souffle with roast veg. and brilliant Yorkshire Puds.

we did the drinking.

Linden flaked out on us all about 12 - she had a class to take the next day - so we all headed around Alsion’s place for a few more beers and (as it turns out) a few pile on’s and some esoteric texting.

Mahinda, Rosy and I eventually walked home. it was late.

For some reason when I got home I watched some American Football…. but only for 10 minutes when I got irritated with the huge gaps between “Plays”.

So instead I watched the start of Django I wasn’t really getting into it, and it was dubbed or something, which made it fairly irritating. So I went to bed.

Monday

Went into work and had the old meeting with the supervisor and then popped out to cricket training - which was more fitness based again. I’m finding the fitness training easy now, which I guess means I’m getting quite fit. which is nice.

Went home and watched the butt end of Bolton 1-0 Spurs which was quite exciting and then watched some comedy stuff before calling it a night.

that is all.

training

After training at cricket on monday along came the turn of Hockey.

Tuesday:

popped down to Sale to try my hand there. went alright and enjoyed it.

Wednesday:

more training of the didsbury northern variety, not as fun as last week but still pretty decent. Still not sure about my stick.

Other stuff that happened included liverpool whumping anderlecht, Man Utd and Chelski both losing and some work ocurred.

watched Bubba Ho-Tep last night, 3/5. but a high three.

Today I went to the pub for lunch and the office is ridiculously humid considering the conditions outside (cold, windy, wet) and it is making everyone here very sleepy. Which is why I’m writing here instead of doing work (yeah, any excuse).

off for pubbage later as band person cancelled on me. Should be fun.

Not much going on…

But thought I’d update anyway.

Sunday ended well with a bunch of the regulars and Sam McVeigh interred around a table eating some really nice Laksa (courtesy of Mahinda) with some really bad wine (courtesy of either Justin or Helen) - which we later discovered had been purchased from Lidl.

We also played a few games of Mallet’s mallet, and a truncated game of “I Have Never” before popping off home and agreeing to do it again sometime.

Monday:

Not a lot went on though I did a fair bit of work and then went and played cricket, which was fun.

In the latter I did eventually manage to find some rhythm and the ball’s spinning a fair way, I just need to put some pace on it and work on my variations.

that’s about it really!

tarra!
